Short Span Compression Tester
For measuring the compression strength of corrugated board components - fluting medium and test liner. Instrument crushes a 15mm wide strip of paper over a gap of 0.7mm to accurately predict component performance.
The Short Span Compression Tester determines the compression strength in a range of mass between 100 and 400 g/m2 in accordance with several fluting medium or test liner standards. The specimen size is 15 x 120 mm.
Operation
The device is set on a steady base plate with a direct current motor, load cell and specimen support, a measuring and electronic control unit. When the strip-shaped specimens are inserted, the pneumatically controlled grips close automatically with a clamping pressure of up to 2500 N. The grips move towards each other, the length of the sample is reduced and the energy required to compress the sample is displayed.
Applications
Edgewise compression strength – important for determining the stacking strength of the finished box
Summation of compression strength of individual box components – this correlates significantly with the compression strength of the combined board. Boxes with the required stacking strength can then be produced economically by optimising the appropriate combination of liners and fluting
