The IGT A1 and A2 printability testers are ideal for quality control and research areas not requiring the additional features of the IGT AIC2-5, Global Standard Tester, C1 or Orange Proofer.

Tests can be performed with various inks on a wide range of substrates including paper, board, plastic film, cellophane, laminate, metal.

A1 and A2 testers are used in a wide range of industries including printing ink, paper and board, print, metal, plastic and packaging, resin, lacquer and coating, raw materials as well as in training and education settings.
Ideal for testing small quantities of ink and substrate under specific conditions and for saving costs in comparison to on-press testing and for:

  • measuring colour with colour measuring systems, spectrophotometers; visual appraisal; density measurements including establishing tolerances; determination of coverage, scratch resistance, wear resistance, flexibility, adhesion and gloss, ink transfer (in g/m2), light fastness and resistance to chemicals
  • testing of printing quality, picking, roughness, Heliotest, printing penetration, set-off, striking through, loose and weakly bound paper articles

The A1-3 is comparable with a single colour printing press. The printing pressure is applied by a spring and adjusted manually via a scaled dial. A pendulum connected to the test strip/impression surface creates a maximum printing speed of approximately 1.25 m/s and the speed at any particular part of the test strip can be determined from a supplied table. An almost constant printing speed can be achieved by turning the instrument by hand.

The A2-3 is comparable with a two colour printing press and supplied with two printing shafts and printing discs. Pressure is again applied via a spring and the pressure on the second shaft is read from a scale at the rear of the tester. The time between printing impressions is approximately 0.5 seconds. The A2-3 is useful for investigating a variety of problems presented by multicolour printing machines, including ink adjustment for wet on wet printing and set-off.

  • Spring Drive Device – useful for tests requiring printing speeds of more than 1.25 m/s. The Spring Drive Device replaces the pendulum of the A1-3 and A2-3 and can be tensioned in three stages to produce maximum speeds of 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 m/s.
